Forest industry takes over the cosmetics sector

Lavliér's launch of Tree Sugar Balm is a concrete step in the forest industry's expansion into the over €500 billion cosmetics business.
Lavliér, a Finnish cosmetics brand, is one of the first in the world to use wood-based cosmetic ingredients in its products. The €500 billion+ cosmetics industry, and in particular its raw materials, is an exciting new application area for wood. In recent years, the forest industry has invested in several companies developing cosmetic raw materials. Lavliér's mission is to act as a pioneer and bridge between the cosmetics sector and the forest industry, developing and commercialising products from these new wood-based raw materials.
"Developing new raw materials and starting their production are huge projects in themselves. It is easy to forget that no matter how advanced a raw material is, it does nothing in itself, and it is difficult to sell it without commercial references. The new raw materials offered by start-ups represent an opportunity for cosmetics waste, but also a risk. Because of our growth company background, Lavliér speaks the same language as start-ups developing raw materials. This creates a unique symbiosis, where new raw materials gain commercial references from our products and Lavliér stands out in the market thanks to its new raw materials. Everyone benefits", says Petro Lahtinen, co-founder.
Tree Sugar Balm, the new product to be launched, is currently a very trendy anhydrous cream. It contains fir sugar, under the trade name SpruceSugarTM. "We are really happy with how successful our first product using a forest raw material has been. We thought for a long time about what would be a suitable first product. We wanted to make a product that would be suitable for as many people as possible, that would be genuinely useful, but that would still benefit from the properties of spruce sugar. Until we realised that we needed to develop a new Vitalis. From this idea, Tree Sugar Balm was born," says Jenna Tikkanen, founder of Lavliér.
Lavliér has worked closely with Montinutra Oy, a manufacturer of fir sugar, and with formulation experts. From this collaboration, a whole new industry and value chain is being built in Finland, "forest cosmetics", which has significant international potential and offers a truly sustainable alternative to today's fossil and palm oil-based cosmetics. Metsä Group has played an essential role in the creation of this new product. Metsä Spring is a shareholder in Boreal Bioproducts Oy, a company that commercialises the raw material fir sugar, and Metsä Group has supported the launch of commercial production of fir sugar palm as a pilot customer.
